10 Ways to Maximize the Remaining Days of Summer

Find me on:

Despite what the back-to-school ads may be imply, summer is not over yet! Set aside your September shopping list and read on for some family-friendly activities to check off your summer bucket list.

Serve a classic summer menu.
1. Fire up the barbecue and enjoy some freshly grilled hotdogs and hamburgers (always a crowd pleaser!).
2. Round out the spread with delicious summer favourites like watermelon, corn on the cob, and strawberries.
3. Then, wash it all down with some thirst-quenching lemonade or iced tea.

Get wet.
Grab your towels and cool off at a local spray park, splash pad, beach or community pool. Or, go old-school in your own backyard with water balloons, an oscillating sprinkler, a kiddie pool, or a slip-and-slide style mat.

Spend a day out.
The Greater Edmonton area has a variety of engaging and educational attractions that will appeal to all ages. Have a look at our top recommendations.

Park it.
Head to your nearest playground, park or open green space for some unstructured playtime. Check the garage or shed for sports gear you may have forgotten about. You can fly a kite, play ring toss, kick a soccer ball, throw a Frisbee, or invent a brand-new game.

Treat yourself.
Nothing says summer like an ice-cold Freezie, popsicle or other frozen treat. If your area has an ice cream shop nearby, visit them to support your local business!

Get back to nature.
Enjoy the scenery in your own community, or venture a short distance to a nearby forest, environmental reserve, city park or river valley. To experience Alberta’s rugged beauty on a larger scale, consider driving east to explore Elk Island National Park.

Watch a movie under the stars.
Set up a cozy backyard movie night with a mobile device, or do an online search for outdoor drive-in movies in your area.

Roll with it.
Every Qualico community has a network of paved multi-use pathways that are perfect for walking, jogging, cycling, pushing a stroller, riding a scooter, rollerblading and more. Don’t forget a helmet!

Open a book.
Take a trip to your local library and sign out some new reading material. Many libraries also loan out more than just books: ask about board games, museum passes and technology. Also check their website and display boards for upcoming kid-focused events and programs.

Dig it up.
Help out at a community garden or spend some time tending to the plants in your yard. If you plant some bulbs in your flower beds now, you can look forward to beautiful daffodils and tulips in the spring.

Whatever activity you choose, be sure to have fun, be safe, and soak up everything that summer has to offer!
